There are two cemeteries in Greendale Township. The Greendale Cemetery is located on West Stewart Road between Magruder and Alamando Roads. A two acre parcel was originally purchased about 1870. In 1940, the Union Ecclesiastical Society, who owned the church and half acre across the road from the cemetery, deeded their property to the Township “for the purpose of community gatherings of all kinds except for the purpose of the sale of any intoxicating liquor or for the use of card parties, dances or political meetings” as specifically spelled out in the deed. The second, the Kelly Cemetery is located at the corner of North Coleman Road and West School Road. It was originally established on a one acre parcel donated by Robert Kelley and another three acres were purchased in 1951.

As was the custom many times in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, persons were buried on their homesteads, which is the case for the first burials in each of these cemeteries. The earliest recorded death in the Kelly Cemetery is Mary Ann Bellinger, March 15, 1908 and the earliest in the Greendale Cemetery is Francis B Gibbs, April 24, 1869. Each of these ladies was disinterred from her home burial and moved to the cemetery when it became available; their graves marked, recorded and maintained for perpetuity. There are also several Civil War Veterans graves located in each cemetery and duly decorated and honored each year. For information on cemetery records or to purchase burial spaces, contact the Township Office for more details.
